SLJ-Waka Ama

I would love to do waka ama because it is a sport taken from our rangatira.
You learn the different calls.
You learn the different strokes.
And those are like what our tupuna done.
Waka Ama is about racing.  that is the different thing.
I am going to be on a waka at Waitangi Day this year, my sister and my mum will be too.

  1. Kia Ora Ngarui,

I’m Dani, a member of the Summer Learning Team. I comment on blogs from students who are apart of the Kaikohekohe (Northland) cluster. I actually grew up in Northland, on a big farm near Okaihau.

It’s great to see that you have completed some activities from the Summer Learning Journey. Tino pai! You have made some great points about what you learn when you participate in Waka Ama. I think I would try Waka Ama if I could, because I would love to learn about the history of it as well as the calls and different strokes.

That’s very exciting that you are paddling with some of your whanau in a waka on Waitangi day. Is that going be at the celebration of Waitangi day, at Waitangi? Have you been doing much training for it or are you starting that soon?

    Keep up the great work!

    -Dani
